There have been humans on Earth for over 200 000 years. Now there are almost 8 billion of us. Throughout history, humans have pondered the existential questions we face throughout our lives. We have created art, stories and rituals to deal with questions about death, the future, dreams, our identity and the changes we go through.
The exhibition opens in five stages. At each opening, the exhibition will be enriched with new content and different ways of approaching the big questions that come with being human.
The various themes addressed by the exhibition are:
Death & the future
It is human to think about death. Throughout human history, we have given meaning to death in different ways, creating rituals to deal with grief and wonder. We have vehicles to travel to the afterlife and ceremonies to support each other when someone passes away.
Future & Identity
Throughout life we go through changes and transitions. From unborn to living, from child to adult, from living to dead. There are many transitions in life, some are for everyone to go through, some of them are specific to a certain group of people. Many transitions are marked by ceremonies and rites that help us deal with who we have been and who we are becoming. Sometimes there are no ceremonies for the transitions we go through, and we may want to create new ones. Sometimes the ceremonies that do exist are not suited for everyone who need them.
Identity & Dreams
Dreams can be a way of dealing with our reality. We can find insight and receive guidance through dreams, and we can have dreams about who we are and want to become. Dreams can help us find expressions of how we want others to see us, and how we see ourselves.
