Role-playing games

drake och riddare som slåss

Dungeons & Dragons was the first dedicated tabletop role-playing game and was launched in the US in 1974. It introduced the concept of character sheets and dice rolls and takes place in a fantasy world with dragons, magic, and heroes. The game was groundbreaking by combining storytelling, roles, and dice in a way that laid the foundation for a whole new type of game.

Humans seem to have always had a need to immerse themselves in roles and fictional worlds. During the Han Dynasty in China 2000 years ago, there were events where participants pretended to live in earlier periods. The French queen Marie Antoinette created an entire village in the 18th century where she and her friends dressed up as shepherds and peasants.

In the exhibition "A World of Games," a rich collection of items related to role playing games is displayed - from early examples of Dungeons & Dragons to costumes used in live action role-playing. Rulebooks, props, adventures, and miniature figures are a selection of the items you can explore in the exhibition.
