A graphic collage on a dark blue background. A South Sámi shoeband in blue, white and red runs horizontally across the center of the image. Behind it, two diagonal bands intersect, combining a black-and-white historical photograph from Jukkasjärvi in 1939 showing a large gathering of Sámi people at the first so-called “Lapp Meeting” with the Reindeer Grazing Commission, together with elements from a map of Sápmi.

Programme

Janan Gutierrez Zapata introduces the exhibition and the opening programme.

The Sámi national joik will be performed by Astrid Tuorda and Ánndaris Rimpi.

Panel Discussion
Sápmi and the Swedish State: Cultural Heritage, Repatriation and Sámi Resistance

What can the work of the Truth Commission teach us about the relationship between Sápmi and the Swedish state, and what paths forward does it open up? What role can museums play in highlighting historical injustices, building knowledge, and fostering trust?

Read more about the discussion here:Sápmi och svenska staten: kulturarv, återlämnande och samiskt motstånd - Världskulturmuseet

The choir KLUSTER will perform, among other pieces, excerpts from Luondo Jiena – Voices of Nature, a work by Ánndaris Rimpi. The composition is based on the Sámi worldview and the Lule Sámi language.

Astrid Tuorda performs her own joik dedicated to the river Gamájåhkå in her home region.
